One Room Challenge - Week 6 - Kid's Bedroom Reveal!

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

Well giddy up!  It's time to reveal little J's completed bedroom makeover!  To be quite honest, I can't believe that I'm writing this before Thursday afternoon!  Yup, it was down to the wire and for someone who isn't exactly a last minute person, this room totally came together at the last minute!  ha!

A huge thank you to Linda for coming up with this amazing event, though at times I wondered what I had gotten myself into, the truth is that there is no way that J's room would be anywhere close to done if it wasn't for the One Room Challenge.

I have to also thank HomeSense for sponsoring this makeover.  I found so many incredible pieces at their store and am absolutely thrilled with how the space came together.  It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of HomeSense, however this is truly the first time that I primarily focused on their juvenile section.  They nailed it with this collection and J's room came together beautifully because of that!

Without further ado....here's where we started:

And here's how it looks now!

So.much.better!

This room came together nicely once the main pieces were found.  The desk, side table, lamps and many accessories were HomeSense finds and are still in store now.  I've been to the store a lot over the past six weeks and was pleasantly surprised by how often many of the pieces that I used were restocked.

A main focus for this space was one, to have fun, and two, to incorporate as much storage as possible!

I made some DIY floating shelves for J to use to display his favourite Lego creations and figurines.  The shelves are flanked by some prints that I found at Chapters on clearance, frames from HomeSense and I painted the frames with a selection of Premier Paint from Canadian Tire (yellow is Honey Mustard and I'm currently sifting through paint chips to find the name of the blue lol).

Though I had a picture in my head of how the shelves and frames would look paired together, I was nervous about how it would turn out since I'd never done this before.  They totally do the job and were super simple to make!

The frames also mark a reading spot for J!  The crate was yet another HomeSense find and I added some castors to the bottom so that J could easily move it around his room.

Can you even believe that this is the same dresser?!  A coat of paint and new hardware completely transformed the piece!  If you didn't see the before, it's pictured here.  The dresser belonged to my mother in law when she was a kiddo, I love inherited pieces and am super excited with how this one looks now that it's blue! (I used Collingwood).  The clock, box and accessories on the dresser are all from HomeSense, told you they had so many amazing pieces for this makeover!

A sweet gallery wall, including a bulletin board for J to hang his artwork, sits above the desk.  I wanted a slim desk with clean lines and was thrilled to find this gorgeousness! (PS old laptops are fab for kids!  J loves to "type" away!).

Next to the desk are two woven baskets for toys.  I added some leather straps to the bins so that we could hang them up on the wall vs placing them on the floor.  J can easily take them down and hang them back up as needed.  I know I've said it already, but storage was key in this space!  The blue behind the desk is Captain's Quarters, the adorable hedgehog print is by GooseBerry Studios and the "J" piece is from HomeSense.

Ah, the bed!  As you know, I was very happy to get rid of the bunk beds.  I appreciate bunk beds, I do, but I did not want (nor did we need) bunk beds in this room.  The headboard was transformed (before can been seen in this post) with some Krylon spray paint (Emerald Green).

The bedskirt was made with Modern Toile fabric from Tonic Living.  Throw pillows and cute pillow cover from HomeSense.  The one thing that I didn't tackle for this space was making a frame for the large map...sigh...I'll get to it soon! (and I'll centre it on the wall too! lol)

I must have passed this lamp a million times at HomeSense before I realized that it would be perfect for this space!  And oh.my.word, the side table.  You guys, it was still in the box and the outside of the box had a picture of a grey & wood table....I was SO happy to discover that it was indeed all walnut colour!

Before I go, a few more shots of the space!

I hope you've enjoyed following along over the past six weeks!  What a fun experience this was!  I can't lie, J is pretty darn happy to have his room back and so very happy to have a new look!

You guys, there are SO many wonderful room makeovers to see, be sure to check them all out here!

Thanks for following along!

Cheers,
Julie

    1. Thank you very much! The baskets were a result of knowing we needed more storage, but not wanting to use up anymore floor space. So glad it all worked out!
