Kid's Bedroom Makeover - ORC Week 4!

Wednesday, April 26, 2017

You guys, some great progress happened this past week and I'm having so much fun adding more and more accessories to the space.  I can finally see it all coming together and it's awesome!

If you're stopping by for the first time, thanks for visiting!  Also, a big thank you to Linda from Calling It Home for organizing the One Room Challenge.  It's honestly been a blast!

This bedroom makeover has been sponsored by HomeSense and I'm so thankful for that!  We are finding the best products!

As a reminder, this is what we started with:

Okay, so in the last week, I painted the headboard green (Krylon's Emerald Green), added the painted detail to the wall behind the desk (Captains' Quarters from Canadian Tire's Premier Paint line), added castors to the wooden box that I picked up from HomeSense (which will be part of J's reading corner) and created a spot for J to hang his hats/sweaters.

I also decided on the fabric for the window treatment.  Since the bed is tucked beside the window on one side, I've decided to go with a full width single short panel that will be pushed to one side.  I think I'll be ordering this fabric from Tonic Living (pictured in the photo below) this week.

(the bedskirt will hide the toy bins perfectly!)

How fun is that pillow cover from HomeSense?!  I also put the art prints in their frames, once I'm done making some shelves (fingers crossed my idea works) the gallery wall will go up!  You may have noticed that I swapped out the rug from the previous post, this one is cozier and works better in the space.

Here's our oh-so-lovely to do list:

  • paint headboard
  • purge room (so.much.clutter and so unnecessary!)
  • make bedskirt
  • paint vintage dresser
  • find desk
  • frame DIY
  • hang gallery wall
  • window treatment
  • hang hooks for clothing
  • find some type of book organization
  • place for J to hang his art
  • make frame for world print
  • paint wall behind desk
  • new lighting

  • There really isn't all that much left to do!  I think accessorizing and finalizing everything will take some time, but we're getting there folks!

You can see the other guests participants posts here and the featured participants posts can be found here!

    Cheers,

    Weekend Cruising!

    Sunday, April 23, 2017

This post has kindly been sponsored by Lochside Cycles, a fabulous Canadian company.  All opinions are my own.

When I was a kid, I always admired my friends who had a basket on their bike.  I know that this probably sounds so silly, but it's true!  I would weave flowers that we picked (read: dandelions) through the front of the basket to create a beautiful floral centrepiece (with my friends permission if course!).  We would fill the basket full of our favourite toys and head to the park.  I don't know what exactly it was about baskets on bikes that I loved so much, but the love was most definitely there.

Well, here I am, 30+ years later (but who's counting, ha!) and my dream has finally come true!  I'm so beyond excited to have had the opportunity to take a Lochside bike for a ride.  The smile that came across my face when I first hopped on the bike was simply ridiculous.  It was a smile of pure joy,  I felt like I had been transported back to my childhood with one quick pedal.

If you haven't heard of Lochside Cycles before, let me introduce you!  The Canadian bike company is based out of Victoria, BC and they have created a phenomenal business, taking their passion for cycling and combining it with their appreciation for great style.  Their line of bikes include single speeds, roadstersstep-throughs like mine, the beautiful Lovelo as well as practical accessories!  Their classic colours and attention to detail make their line of bikes eye-catching and dreamy!

The beautiful stitching, comfortable leather seat and the ability to change gears with ease are just a few of the reasons why I'm completely head over heels for this gorgeous ride.  My husband has been a long time bike enthusiast and it's only as of recently that I began to understand and appreciate the construction of a great bike.  I never really got it before, but when you hop on a bike that has been crafted out of quality products and designed with comfort and style in mind, you really do see and feel the difference.

I'm so excited to spend weekends riding this beautiful bike along the water with the family, it's the epitome of a cruiser and I have every intention of cruising all summer long!

    Cheers,

    Fashionable Paper!

    Friday, April 21, 2017

It's absolutely incredible how short weeks always tend to feel so very long!  This week was no exception and may very well take the cake for the longest short week everrrrrr!

But it's Friday and that deserves a fresh bouquet of white roses, right?!  I'm in complete awe of this gorgeous Alle bag made by Uashmama.  A tote bag that is made of washable paper (yes, paper) that looks and feels like leather.  I'm honestly blown away by this fact and was so impressed by the attention to detail.  Combining style & function in a way that so many will love!  You can see their beautiful line of paperbags, handbags, accessories and more right here!  And you can read more about the brand here.

So excited to kick back and relax this weekend AND it's supposed to be beautiful!  This rain is great and all, if you don't have any spray painting to do! lol!

    Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

    Cheers,

ORC Week 3 - Boys' Bedroom Makeover!

    Wednesday, April 19, 2017

Oh my word!  It's already week 3 of the One Room Challenge (you can see Week 1 right here), and I can say that earlier this week, panic officially hit!  I always had a huge amount of respect for those who participated in this great challenge (hosted by Linda from Calling It Home), but I have to say that now that I'm actually taking part, I'm bowing down!  Especially to those who are tearing rooms apart.  I'm not tearing down any walls, but still feel like I'm chipping away at my to-do list at a snails pace!

Thank you again to HomeSense for sponsoring this room makeover!  Of course, all opinions are my own :)

So this week I got around to painting the vintage dresser (that belong to my mother in law when she was a kiddo) and I'm looovvvving the new colour!  It's "Collingwood" and is from Canadian Tire's new paint line, Premier.  It went on beautifully!  I had decided on these knobs early on and am pretty certain that I'll be going with them.

I also managed to complete the frame DIY that I had mentioned before.  I used two colours of paint to add some detail to the frames, next up is adding the artwork and hanging the gallery wall.  There will be a few other things going up on this wall too, which is why the frames are still sitting on the ground!

Last week I had the opportunity to preview HomeSense's new Juvenile line.  Gosh it's absolutely incredible! (you can see some of my favourite pieces from the preview here on Instagram).  There were several items that I knew I'd be searching for for J's bedroom makeover.  I was completely thrilled when I spotted this bedside table at our store because it was one of the items from the preview that I knew I needed for this space!  Woohoo!  I found the lamp during the same shopping trip, it's hammered base is fabulous!

One thing that didn't go as planned, was the colour I was planning on using behind the desk.  I had opted for this lighter blue (which is a great colour, I actually used it for the frame DIY), but I need something with a little more oomph.  I'm going to try the darker colour, on the bottom right, next.  If that doesn't work, I'll go with the other one, which is the dresser colour.

Okay, here's the to-do list, let's see where we stand:

  • paint headboard
  • purge room (so.much.clutter and so unnecessary!)
  • make bedskirt
  • paint vintage dresser
  • find desk
  • frame DIY
  • hang gallery wall
  • window treatment
  • hang hooks for clothing
  • find some type of book organization
  • place for J to hang his art
  • make frame for world print
  • paint wall behind desk
  • new lighting

  • I added "painting the wall behind the desk", should have been there from the beginning!  Even though the list is still rather long, I feel a productive week coming along.  It's time to paint that headboard, make the bedskirt and to finish up a few decorative DIYs!  I'm also considering making some type of window treatment, the room needs it, so I've added it to the list.

Can't wait to update you all next week!

Now you have to check out the other guest participants, there are so many incredible room transformations happening!  Find them all here.

The One Room Challenge - Week 2

    Wednesday, April 12, 2017

Okay, here we are in the second week of the ORC.  Thanks a bunch for visiting to see how things are going so far.  Again, a huge thanks to Linda from Calling it Home for hosting and to HomeSense for sponsoring little J's bedroom makeover!  You can see all of the incredible rooms of the One Room Challenge participating here and the rooms of the guest participants right here!

We tackled a lot (and by we, I mean me, ha!).  The first thing I did was to totally clear out little J's room and essentially started from scratch, and that alone, took foreverrrrr.  Honestly, this child manages to find a reason to keep almost anything and everything! lol love that little booger!

By removing everything, I was able to see the space that I was working with, uncluttered.  We've agreed (that's little J and I) that he will still have his toys in his room, but that we will donate the ones that he doesn't play with anymore.  Those toys that he doesn't play with on a regular basis will go to the basement.  Solves the clutter issue just like that!

    Here's where we are now......

This is what it looked like at the beginning of last week!  What a difference!  The room already feels a million times bigger!

We took down the bunk beds (!!!!!!!) and the dresser (which belonged to my MIL when she was young) was taken out of the closet and placed in it's new home.  It will be getting a fresh coat of paint and new hardware.

The bedskirt fabric arrived earlier this week (it's currently just tucked in place so that I could see what it would look like).  Hopefully I'll have more crossed off of my list by the start of week 3!  Here's a closer look at the fabric.

I found the perfect desk at HomeSense!  Like the.perfect.desk.  J's room is on the smaller side, so we needed something that would do the job, but that wouldn't take up a lot of room.

Yes, it's rather narrow, but to be very honest, he very rarely used the old desk that was in his room, it was wasted space.  So I figured we'll go narrow, though there isn't a lot of surface space, there is enough space for him to colour, draw, build lego and play for those times that he would prefer to be in his room.  Not a lot of space for clutter to gather....know what I mean?!

I also found a vintage metal stool which I'm so excited about, every room needs a touch of vintage.  I may sand down the seat and stain it, or perhaps I'll give it a fresh coat of paint.  Still undecided.

The blue paint swatch that is taped to the wall is most likely the colour I'll be going with for the desk wall.  Not gonna tell you what I'm doing with it though (partially because I'm still undecided ha!).  You'll have to wait and see!

And honestly, how c-u-t-e is this fox pillow from HomeSense?!  Perfect colour palette and character for this room makeover!  The funny thing is that I bought the striped pillow about a year ago, and they look like they were purchased at the same time!  Love it when that happens!

I'm also loving the headboard and the fact that the bed no longer has a footboard.  It makes a huge difference in creating more visual space.  Time for a new look though!  The headboard will a new colour in the next few days!

Ok, here's the list from last week.  Let's see what we've scratched off:

  • paint headboard
  • purge room (so.much.clutter and so unnecessary!)
  • make bedskirt
  • paint vintage dresser (not shown)
  • find desk
  • frame DIY
  • hang gallery wall
  • hang hooks for clothing
  • find some type of book organization
  • place for J to hang his art
  • make frame for world print
  • new lighting

  • Okay, I crossed of lighting because I did find that desk lamp, but I can't lie, still looking for a lamp for the bedside table and perhaps a new ceiling light.  So it's 50% done!

I'll also add a bedside table to the list, totally forgot about it on the previous post!

Check out the other One Room Challenge guest participants right here!
