Why So Much?!

Friends, let's talk about this budget thing that I touched base on a week ago.  Why?  Because I know I've peeked your interest.

It seems as though many of us are heading into 2013 with the "less is more" mentality.  I think it's a good place to start.

The question as to why I've personally decided to hop on the bandwagon has been put in front of me and so I thought, why not share the answer here.  Since we're keeping it real and all, right?  Right.

Well for me, it wasn't because I was breaking the bank.  It wasn't about throwing around my credit card as though I'm not the one having to pay the bill (but that would be nice, now wouldn't it?!).  It was more about wondering what the point of spending all of the money when we really don't need to.
I'm not exactly writing out a budget, allocating a certain amount of money for this or that, it's more about minimizing spending.  It's about not buying something just because it's on sale.  I love a good sale, don't get me wrong but that shouldn't be the reason why I'm buying something.

I mean, everyone loves a great deal, right?!

Or seeing something that I think the kids would love and so I buy it.

just because you can, doesn't mean you should

And basically, that's all it boiled down to.

I recently went through my closet and got rid of all of the clothes and shoes that I either no longer wore or that I didn't feel good wearing.  In this case, less truly is more!  It felt awesome.  I have 1/2 the amount of clothes than I did before, but now,  I love and wear everything in my closet. I'd much prefer to have fewer, nice things vs lots of mediocre things.

By the way. Isn't it funny how the clothes hanging in your closet can make you feel guilty if you don't wear them? Or is that just something that happens to me?

So, how can you improve?  Glad you asked!

ask yourself: do you need it - like do you really need it?

remember: a sale isn't the reason to buy

who are you buying for? may sound pretty straight forward, but I'm serious. are you buying something because you saw someone else with it and want it, or are you buying it because you truly want it?

stay home - this has been key for me. if you don't know of the sales or see what's new in store, you'll be less likely to want to buy

unplug - take a weekend, a day or even an afternoon off from social media.  you will be amazed by how good this can truly be for ones soul, it's one of those things that you may not truly understand until you do it

sleep on it - unless it's something at homesense, an antique store or a thrift store (where they are one of a kind or stock isn't always replenished), come back another day.  if you really want whatever it is a few days later, then go get 'er!  Or even better, wait for it to go on sale

I'm not saying don't treat yourself or pamper yourself, I still think we all deserve those!  It's just a matter of choosing more wisely where to spend, how to spend and when to spend.

Remember, it's the simple things.  Life is going on around you and doesn't stop.  Quality over quantity.

Cheers,

Oh so true! I'm trying to slowly but surely down size on my wardrobe (I currently have a 'one in one out' system going on!) and general stuff Ive held onto for too long! It will feel so good when I have an organised sorted space around me!

I'm in rather the opposite position - I've been in such a habit of not buying things that my husband has started encouraging me to impulse buy! He thinks, perhaps accurately, that it might get me comfortable with spending more - I'm the one who still wears ancient clothes that have lost their shape and color simply because they are still in one piece and technically wearable - but I'm trying to get myself to realize that if I wouldn't cut it up to make clothes for the baby, because the fabric's no longer any good, I probably shouldn't be wearing it myself either! And my husband deserves to come home to something better than a dowdy housewife in fifteen year old knit tops... So I'm working on shopping! :-)
